What is sky? It is air. It is wind. It is breath. It is water. It is light. It is sun, moon, stars. It is a gathering together of many of the elements needed for life here on earth.
It is the backdrop to our days, the immense background that colors our lives.
It is vast. It is ancient. It is always, forever, and ever, each day and minute, changing. Changing in color and texture, in makeup, and design. It is constant and also in constant flux.
I’ve been looking at the sky lately. Looking at the way the light plays against the clouds. Looking at the way the clouds move and turn. Looking at the way the colors change from day to day and sometimes from minute to minute.
But I think I’m looking for something else too. I’m looking for clues. I’m looking for meaning, in my own life and in the larger sense of humanity as a species. I’m looking for answers. I’m looking for a tie that binds us together. I’m looking for something great enough to soothe our broken hearts, our healing scars. I’m looking for a salve. I’m looking for signs. I’m looking for answers.
We are all looking. All over the world we are looking. Have always been looking. In one form or another. We turn our sweet faces to the sky in prayer, in hope, in wonder. We live out our lives under this vast canvas of constantly shifting colors. We grow. We gather. We hunt. We cook. We play. We kiss. We raise our babies up. We make things. We love. We hate. We cry, we laugh, we sing.
And sometimes, when the light is just right, and the wind is a slight tickle on our little necks, and our souls are quiet with music, or watching the plants grow, or with love, for a little moment we stop looking. We stop looking and we start listening. And if we are very quiet, very, very, VERY quiet, we can HEAR. And what we hear sounds like whispers, like soft sighs, like voices in perfect harmony, like a purr, like water, like wind.
Like the beating of a mother’s heart.
And for a moment we truly know home.
We are a people desperate for change. Our mouths salivate for something we cannot grasp. We are rabid with the want of it. And yet most of us can’t even say what it IS that we want.
We NEED a shift. A shift of mind, a shift of heart. A shift in vision, a shift in direction, a shift in our communities, a shift in our culture, a shift in our civilization.
The shift IS happening. We feel it every day. Change is scary. Many of us are very anxious all the time. It is very hard to live in such a way. Our nerves are frazzled. We are exhausted. The fear is isolating. It drives us apart.
It is ok to be scared. It is ok to hum with anxiety. It is ok to feel lost. It is ok to wake in the night and feel alone. It is all ok. We are living through a time of great change. It is ok. It is needed. It is happening.
But we are here together. We must remember that. No matter how hard the world works to drive us apart, we are together. We can feel each other. Even over vast distances we know one another. We are different sides of the same great coin.
And maybe that’s why I find myself turning skyward. Why I love to feel the rays of light on my skin from that brilliant golden coin in the sky.
Because it reminds me we are united. We need only look up to remember we are all part of the same family here on earth. That we are connected to the birds, and the trees, and the rocks, and the mountain lions, and the water, and the salamanders, and the bears, and the spiders, and each other, and everything else all the time. No matter how bad things get, no matter how sad they seem or how disjointed they get, no matter how distanced we feel or alone we might think we are here on the land, we all see the same sky, with its sun, and moon, and stars, and planets, and clouds, and rain, and wind. There is the same sacred spark in all of us. In everything.
We are members of an ancient family of sky gazers.
Remember.
Look
up.
Thank you for listening,
Love,
Natasha
